‘Online to co-exist with offline teaching in the new normal’

In India we had myriad of challenges in getting the online classrooms going. These ranged from issues of uninterrupted supply of electricity, to an overload on internet bandwagon and data cost issues for the students, notwithstanding the climate of uncertainty. The advantages gained by the online classes in unprecedented times with largely unfamiliar tools has been amazing for the private schools. Most teachers progressed at an amazing speed, largely due to their commitment and sincerity.

Education in times of Covid

While teachers were caught off guards when they had to deliver online teaching during lockdown, parents were saddled with the additional responsibility of working from home and fulfilling their parental roles. The terrain was largely unfamiliar and the times of uncertainty were unparalleled with fears of Covid looming large. While use of technological tools was not out of choice for the teachers, neither was it easy for the working parent at home.

Challenges in online classrooms

Nobody is as important as the learner in the classrooms and their satisfaction is of utmost importance. While majority of learners expressed satisfaction of what was being taught, there were students who found sub-standard, ill-planned lessons which did not challenge and sufficiently motivate them. There were also issues of the weaker or average students being ignored as the teachers are in a hurry to complete the lesson. The concerns about students with special needs are also not attended to. It may sound a tall order but the crisis may take a while and learner satisfaction has to be met by personalised education to meet individual educational needs.
